Human Bean Celebrates Earth Day with Reusable Bag Giveaway

Human Bean Celebrates Earth Day every year with a reusable shopping bag giveaway.  Earth Day is on April, 22nd.  We will be showing customer appreciation by giving away reusable bags on Friday, April 21st and have been doing this since 2011.  We estimate that we have given away 90,000 of them and also plan to give away about 15,000 more this  year.

Why Use Reusable Shopping Bags?

A simple way to be kinder to our earth is to use reusable shopping bags. Many communities, including the city of Ashland locally, have banned the use of disposable plastic shopping bags.  This is due to the damage they can cause to our environment and wildlife. A plastic bag can take from 15-1,000 years to break down depending on environment.  Millions of birds, turtles and other sea animals die each year from ingesting the plastic waste that doesn’t make it into landfills. Reusable shopping bags can replace disposable plastic bags.  They are also made of recycled materials and typically have a lifespan equal to that of more than 700 plastic bags. When worn out, reusable bags can then be recycled. Additionally many stores now give discounts to customers that bring in their own shopping bags.  Plus they now come in many fashionable and cute shapes and prints, like ours!

How the Human Bean Celebrates Earth Day Every Day

The Human Bean tries to extend their earth friendly practices globally as well as through their Farm Friendly Direct program.  This is their direct-trade coffee sourcing program.  They work directly with the farmers that grow their coffee.  Therefore they can pay them at or above market prices.  They also allocate additional funds for community projects such as: building water systems, school and community centers and facilitating earth friendly soil, water and farming practices.  You can learn more about The Human Bean and Farm Friendly Direct here!

What’s the Big Deal about Single Origin Coffee Anyhow?

Single Origin Coffee is grown within a single known geographic origin. Sometimes this is a single farm or comparatively a specific collection of beans from a single country. Therefore the coffee is usually named after the place it was grown to the narrowest degree available.

single origin coffeesingle origin coffee

What sets a single origin coffee bean apart from the rest of the blends is that the coffee was very likely grown in specific conditions.  Estate grown (also referred to as a Micro-Lot or Single Farm) are examples of this.  Single Origin coffee should have specific regional characteristics.  In the same fashion as wine grapes, many factors contribute to the taste of a single origin coffee.  These factors include the soil it’s grown in, also the altitude of the farm, the farming method used, the varietal of coffee tree,  and the climate conditions too. Therefore when compared to a blend, a single origin coffee should be more true to its origin.  Most importantly it should represent the type of coffee bean.  And it should show flavor nuances characteristic of where it was grown.

Coffee Farmer on his Coffee Farm in Papua New Guinea

Coffee¬†that is labeled as Single Origin¬†is not all created equal. As a matter of fact it could be a¬†single farm, a single region or a single country they are referring to. This can also make a big difference when the country is the size of Brazil.¬† It could be a blend of many types of coffee from many different farms spread across different regions within the country.¬† Comparatively it could be grown by the same farmers and the same coffee trees in the same spot year after year.¬†In light of this there is large definition and difference of opinion on what ‚Äúsingle-origin‚ÄĚ actually encompasses.

Here at the Human Bean, if we label one of our coffee beans as single origin, it means first that it was grown in one region at one farm.  Second, a long standing coffee farmer grew it and we have most likely traveled to meet.  Third, we have tasted the coffee and appreciated the flavors of their region and farm. As part of our Farm Friendly Direct program we aim to support individual coffee growers and communities and want to be as socially responsible and honest in our coffee labeling as possible. We have several Human Bean single origin coffees you can purchase online from a variety of countries including: Costa Rica, Guatemala, Papa New Guinea, Mexico and also Honduras.  Experience these flavors yourself by buying from The Human Bean!

New Human Bean Location Opens in Lake Havasu AZ

Another new Human Bean location proves that coffee consumption continues to grow.  But this is not the black drip coffee of the past! One third of the population drinks a gourmet coffee or espresso beverage each day.  And drive-thru options only continue to grow in popularity due to our fast paced and on-the-go lifestyles. Although in a hurry, consumers are not willing to sacrifice quality for convenience.  This makes The Human Bean’s award winning Farm-Friendly Direct coffee and high quality products the perfect combination.

Headquartered in Oregon, The Human Bean has opened six new Human Bean locations in the past six months in five different states.  These states include Missouri, Oregon, Idaho, Colorado & Arizona. The latest of which was the third location to open in the Lake Havasu area November, 14th. This new Human Bean location brought the total Human Bean count to 64.new human bean location

Brian & Juls Baumkirchner, owners of all three Havasu locations, said they came into the role of Human Bean Franchisee when they took over the first location at 633 North Lake Havasu Avenue in 2007. The Baumkirchners saw the potential for this location to be the bustling coffee drive-thru destination that it is today. Their other two locations are on South McCulloch and now North Palo Verde on Highway 95. Between the three locations they are able to provide employment for 30 employees plus 1 handyman, 1 machine maintenance person and 1 bookkeeper.

Choosing a new Human Bean Location

Brain Baumkirchner said they chose this new Human Bean¬†location because many of their customers had constantly asked for it. ‚ÄúThe North side of town doesn‚Äôt have very many business establishments for the residents and tourists alike. Additionally this location has higher traffic when compared to the two other locations.‚Ä̬† Couple that with the fact that it has a double drive through and ample vehicle cueing; it is designed to provide the very best customer experience.
The Baumkirchners also have letters of intent for additional locations signed in nearby cities.

Baumkirchner credits this growth to the brand supporting their franchisees and says, ‚ÄúThe Human Bean Team has become like a family for us.‚ÄĚ Human Bean co-founder, Dan Hawkins, states ‚ÄúBrian and Juls are phenomenal operators and it is a joy to get to work with them. They have a passion for creating the very best customer experience and the results are really something special!‚ÄĚ

Baumkirchner sums it up nicely when he says, ‚ÄúIt‚Äôs amazing to be a part of a quality brand and system that grew to 3 stores with proper management. Like I always tell people, ‚ÄėIf the coffee wasn‚Äôt superior and service was sub-par, we wouldn‚Äôt exist!‚Äô‚ÄĚ

The kind of growth Baumkirchner has experienced speaks for the brand as a whole.  The Human Bean shows no signs of slowing down on growth.  The company plans to open at least 19 more franchise locations by the end of 2017 throughout the US.  This would bring  the total to 82.new human bean location

Holiday Cheer | The Human Bean

This holiday season The Human Bean served up holiday cheer. Baristas participated in the Annual Greystone Court/Access can food drive in Medford, Oregon. The night before Christmas eve we served 20 gallons of chocolate milk. Thanks to Umpqua Dairy for helping to provide the milk. We were able to serve Hot Cocoa to those donating to the cause. Families and friends checked out the brightly decorated street, our baristas warmed their hearts and bellies with holiday cheer! Check out pictures of the event below.

Holiday Lights Light the Way to Giving

Greystone Court has long held the tradition of lighting the way to community giving. Canned goods are donated to our local community while everyone enjoys the lights. Consequently everyone helps feed the hungry in the community. Holiday spirit is felt throughout the court!

Access is a local organization that provides food, housing, warmth and essential services to low income individuals and families. Residents in Jackson County have been served by Access since 1976.

Greystone Court

Greystone is not the only event that The Human Bean and Access work together. Since 2010 The Human Bean has held an annual food drive that benefits Access. The event is held in August because this is typically the time of year that donations are at the lowest point.
