What’s the Big Deal about “Single Origin” Coffee Anyhow?

Single-origin coffee is coffee grown within a single known geographic origin. Sometimes this is a single farm, or a specific collection of beans from a single country. The name of the coffee is then usually the place it was grown to the narrowest degree available.

What sets a single origin coffee bean apart from the rest of the blends is that the coffee was very likely grown in specific conditions, such as Estate grown (also referred to as a Micro-Lot or Single Farm) and should have specific regional characteristics. Similar to wine grapes, many factors contribute to the taste of a single origin coffee: the soil it’s grown in, the altitude of the farm, the farming method used, the varietal of coffee tree, climate conditions, etc. Compared to a blend, a single origin coffee should be more true to its origin and the type of coffee bean and show flavor nuances characteristic of where it was grown.

But, that does not mean that all coffee labeled single origin is created equal. Is it a single farm, single region or single country they are referring to? This can make a big difference when the country is the size of Brazil and it could be a blend of many types of coffee from many different farms spread across different regions within the country versus grown by the same farmers and the same coffee trees in the same spot year after year. Therefore there is large definition and difference of opinion on what “single-origin” actually encompasses.

Here at the Human Bean, if we label one of our coffee beans as single origin, it means it was grown in one region at one farm and most likely by a long standing coffee farmer that we have traveled to meet and have tasted the coffee and appreciated the flavors of their region and farm. As part of our Farm Friendly Direct program we aim to support individual coffee growers and communities and want to be as socially responsible and honest in our coffee labeling as possible. We have several single origin blends you can purchase online from a variety of countries including: Costa Rica, Guatemala, Papa New Guinea, Mexico & Honduras at https://thehumanbean.com/single-origin/ and we would love to tell you the story of where they were grown and what they each taste like although that is something you should experience for yourself!

Another New Location Opens in Lake Havasu, AZ – The Human Bean shows no Signs of Slowing Down!

Coffee consumption continues to grow, but this is not the black drip coffee of the past! One third of the population drinks a gourmet coffee or espresso beverage each day and drive-thru options only continue to grow in popularity due to our fast paced and on-the-go lifestyles. Although in a hurry, consumers are not willing to sacrifice quality for convenience which makes The Human Bean’s award winning Farm-Friendly Direct coffee and high quality products the perfect combination.
Headquartered in Oregon, The Human Bean has opened six new coffee franchises in the past six months in five different states (Missouri, Oregon, Idaho, Colorado & Arizona). The latest of which was the third location to open in the Lake Havasu area November, 14th. This location brought the total Human Bean count to 64.havasu-pic
Brian & Juls Baumkirchner, owners of all three Havasu locations, said they came into the role of Human Bean Franchisee when they took over the first location at 633 North Lake Havasu Avenue in 2007. The Baumkirchners saw the potential for this location to be the bustling coffee drive-thru destination that it is today. Their other two locations are on South McCulloch and now North Palo Verde on Highway 95. Between the three locations they are able to provide employment for 30 employees plus 1 handyman, 1 machine maintenance person and 1 bookkeeper.
Brain Baumkirchner said they chose this new location because many of their customers had constantly asked for it. “The North side of town doesn’t have very many business establishments for the residents and tourists alike. Additionally this location has higher traffic when compared to the two other locations.” Couple that with the fact that it has a double drive through and ample vehicle cueing; it is designed to provide the very best customer experience.
The Baumkirchners also have letters of intent for additional locations signed in nearby cities. Baumkirchner credits this growth to the brand supporting their franchisees and says, “The Human Bean Team has become like a family for us.” Human Bean co-founder, Dan Hawkins, states “Brian and Juls are phenomenal operators and it is a joy to get to work with them. They have a passion for creating the very best customer experience and the results are really something special!”
Baumkirchner sums it up nicely when he says, “It’s amazing to be a part of a quality brand and system that grew to 3 stores with proper management. Like I always tell people, ‘If the coffee wasn’t superior and service was sub-par, we wouldn’t exist!’”
The kind of growth Baumkirchner has experienced speaks for the brand as a whole and the Human Bean shows no signs of slowing down on growth with plans to open at least 19 more franchise locations by the end of 2017 throughout the US bringing the total to 82.human-bean-havasu-3
