Single Origin Coffee is grown within a single known geographic origin. Sometimes this is a single farm or comparatively a specific collection of beans from a single country.¬†Therefore the¬†coffee is¬†usually¬†named after¬†the place it was grown to the narrowest degree available.
What sets a single origin coffee bean apart from the rest of the blends is that the coffee was very likely grown in specific conditions.¬† Estate grown (also referred to as a Micro-Lot or Single Farm) are examples of this.¬† Single Origin coffee¬†should have specific regional characteristics.¬†¬†In the same fashion as¬†wine grapes, many factors contribute to the taste of a single origin coffee.¬† These factors include¬†the soil it‚Äôs grown in, also the altitude of the farm, the farming method used, the varietal of coffee tree,¬† and the climate conditions too. Therefore when compared to a blend, a single origin coffee should be more true to its origin.¬† Most importantly it should represent¬†the type of coffee bean.¬† And it should¬†show flavor nuances characteristic of where it was grown.

Coffee¬†that is labeled as Single Origin¬†is not all created equal. As a matter of fact it could be a¬†single farm, a single region or a single country they are referring to. This can also make a big difference when the country is the size of Brazil.¬† It could be a blend of many types of coffee from many different farms spread across different regions within the country.¬† Comparatively it could be grown by the same farmers and the same coffee trees in the same spot year after year.¬†In light of this there is large definition and difference of opinion on what ‚Äúsingle-origin‚ÄĚ actually encompasses.

Human Bean Single Origin Coffee
Costa Rica Single Origin:
Floral, Fruity, Balanced.¬† This coffee begins with sweet floral aromas with subtle undertones of pipe tobacco. A medium body containing notes of sweet cocoa and also graham crackers. The quick finish is a perfect expression of this great example of Costa Rican coffees. Grown in the Naranjo region in the West Valley of Costa Rica between 4000 – 5200 feet.
Guatemala Single Origin:
Nutty, Smooth, Complex .¬†¬†Direct from the Finca El Paternal farm, this delicious single origin coffee begins with the fruity aroma of cherries and apples, also with just a mild hint of vanilla. The well balanced flavor combines a full body with sweet undertones of chocolate. Finishing with a smooth creamy taste, this coffee may just become your new favorite. Uniquely it was featured on Morning Edition on NPR! Grown in the Huehuetenago region of Western Guatemala
Papua New Guinea Single Origin:
Full, Citrus, & Lively Flavors.¬† Delicious creamy body with stone, fruit and spice on the nose and also apricot and pineapple flavors with mild acidity. Persimmon and cherry sweetness perfectly balanced with a mild earthiness. Grown and delicately harvested in Papua New Guinea’s Western Highland at altitudes of 1600-1800 meters.
Mexico Single Origin:
Even, Spicy, Rousing.¬† This is a very well balanced Organic Mexican coffee. Starting with a spiced honey aroma, this coffee also¬†tastes of chocolate and light citrus with a smooth. A velvety body and a creamy finish makes this organic coffee really something special. From the Mixteca Alta del Pacifico Co-op in the Oaxaca region. Available in limited quantities while supplies last. Grown at 4000 – 5200 feet.
Honduras Single Origin:
Luscious, Caramel, Delicate.¬†¬†This well balanced organic coffee combines floral hints with brown sugar and caramel, and also¬†finishes with a hint of coffee pulp. Grown in the Copan region in western Honduras. While this is often a blend base, this one totally stands alone.
